ICPC Corrects Error, Says No Evidence of Diversion in NELFUND Student Loan Scheme

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has issued a correction to its earlier statement regarding the investigation into the student loan scheme administered by the National Education Loan Fund (NELFUND).

Mr. Demola Bakare, the spokesman for the commission late Thursday said the ICPC confirmed that a clear case of discrepancies has NOT been established in the administration of the student loan scheme.

“The ICPC’s investigation will now extend to beneficiary institutions and individual student recipients to determine if any discrepancies exist.

“So far, the Commission has only established the total amount of funds received and disbursed by NELFUND, and no evidence of diversion or discrepancies has been found,” he said.

Persecondnews reported earlier that the Commission had in statement disclosed that contrary to the N100 billion allocated to tertiary institutions, a mere N28.8 billion actually reached students.

Their initial findings indicate a significant diversion of funds, with at least N71.2 billion unaccounted for by university administrations that held these monies.

The spokesman for the commission, told newsmen in Abuja that key stakeholders, including the Director-General of the Budget Office and the Accountant-General of the Federation have been invited by the anti-graft agency.

Also invited are senior officials of the Central Bank of Nigeria as well as the Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director of NELFUND to provide documentation and explanations relevant to the case.

“The ICPC urges the general public to exercise patience as thorough investigations require time and ample resources. Persons with valuable information are encouraged to reach out to the Commission through info@icpc.gov.ng.”
