In a bid to position itself as a major contender in the 2027 presidential election, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has unveiled a joint ticket featuring Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi.
Dubbed the “unity and rescue ticket,” the duo is being presented by the party as a viable alternative for Nigerian voters.
The decision was announced on Monday in Abuja by the party’s National Publicity Secretary and former Minister of Sports, Bolaji Abdullahi after consultations with stakeholders, coalition partners and representatives from across the country.
Amaechi’s selection was influenced by his strong showing in the ADC presidential primaries, where he polled 504,117 votes to finish second ahead of Mohammed Hayatu-Deen with 177,120 votes, alongside his extensive track record in public service, according to the party’s spokesman.
“The proposed partnership between His Excellency Atiku Abubakar and Rt Hon Rotimi Amaechi represents more than a political alliance; it is the coming together of two tested statesmen with the experience, national reach, and leadership capacity required to rescue Nigeria from its current challenges and reposition the country for a new era of prosperity, security, and inclusive development,” he said in a statement obtained by Persecondnews.
Amaechi brings a wealth of experience to the ticket. He served as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly between 1999 and 2007, then as Governor of Rivers State for two terms from 2007 to 2015, before taking on the role of Minister of Transportation under former President Muhammadu Buhari from 2015 to 2023, where he supervised major railway and transportation initiatives.
“Few political leaders in Nigeria today possess such extensive and balanced experience across both the legislative and executive arms of government. This depth of experience will be invaluable in supporting the next ADC administration from day one,” the party added.
Leaders of the ADC also emphasized Amaechi’s political clout in the South-South and broader Southern Nigeria, which they said would enhance the ticket’s electoral strength and foster greater national appeal across divides.
His standing as a reform-oriented administrator and coalition builder positions him well to complement Atiku’s bid, the statement said.
“Together, Atiku Abubakar and Rotimi Amaechi embody a truly national ticket—one that bridges regions, generations, and political traditions.
“Their combined experience in governance, economic management, public administration, party organisation, and nation-building offers Nigerians a credible and compelling alternative capable of restoring confidence in government and accelerating national development,” Abdullahi stated.
The party said the Atiku-Amaechi ticket would center its campaign on key national priorities including economic recovery, job creation, national security and the promotion of national unity.
“At a time when millions of Nigerians are demanding competent leadership, economic revival, job creation, security, and national unity, the Atiku-Amaechi ticket sends a clear message: the ADC is prepared to govern, prepared to unite the nation, and prepared to deliver results,” the statement added.
The ADC called on party members, coalition partners, civil society organisations, youth groups and women leaders to throw their weight behind the ticket as momentum builds toward the 2027 general election.
Persecondnews notes that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar (1999–2007) brings extensive presidential campaign experience to the table.
He ran against President Bola Tinubu in 2023 among several previous presidential contests.
Observers see the strategic alliance as an attempt to transform the ADC into a formidable opposition for the high-stakes 2027 election.
