The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Commissioner Saka Adewale Ajao has denounced the unprovoked attack on security operatives by members of the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria(IMN), also known as the Shi’ites during a procession marking their International Quds Day in Abuja on Friday.
At least 19 suspects have been arrested in connection with the violent attacks.
The Command reported receiving a distress call at 2:20 pm on March 28, alerting them to a violent assault on security personnel by IMN members armed with firearms, cutlasses, catapults, sticks, stones, petrol bombs, and other lethal weapons in the Banex Area, Aminu Kano Crescent, Wuse 2.
Following the swift deployment of police and other security personnel to the scene, they were met with intense gunfire resulting in serious injuries to three of the security operatives.
They were promptly rushed to the National Hospital, Abuja where one of them was pronounced dead.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, said in a statement sent to Persecondnews on Friday that normalcy has, however, been fully restored while investigations have begun into the incident.
She said all individuals involved in the incident would be apprehended and brought to justice.
The statement reads: “CP Ajao Saka Adewale emphasized that actions are being implemented to apprehend those responsible for this heinous act.
“The Commissioner warns that attacks on security operatives who risk their lives to protect citizens will not be tolerated.
“He urges residents to remain calm, cooperate with law enforcement agencies, and report any suspicious activities to the Command at the following numbers: 08032003913, 08061581938, 07057337653, and 08028940883.”
