I am nobody’s hero, Macaroni fires back

338

Mr. Macaroni, a popular Nigerian comedian and activist, has reaffirmed his decision to snub Lagos Governor Babajide Sanajayi Sanwo-Olu at public events.

Persecondnews reports that his stance has sparked intense debate, with some defending his actions as a commitment to his values and others criticizing him for disrespecting the governor.

Mr. Macaroni’s defiance is rooted in his advocacy for accountability in leadership and his criticism of poor governance in Nigeria.

He has made it clear that his actions are guided by principle, rather than personal animosity towards the governor.

In response to the backlash, Mr. Macaroni has stated that he will continue to snub the governor, emphasizing that his actions are a reflection of his commitment to his values.

For months, Mr. Macaroni has been at the centre of political debates, with many questioning his refusal to acknowledge or engage with the Lagos governor.

Some have labeled him disrespectful, while others argue that his actions stem from unresolved grievances.

However, he maintained that his decision is driven by his conscience and not by any desire for public validation or approval.

“I am no saint. I am nobody’s hero. I am far from perfect,” he stated. “I do what I do only because I strongly believe in it.”

The backlash against him has been relentless. Critics accused him of holding grudges and unnecessarily fueling division, while supporters see him as a voice of the oppressed.

Yet, Mr. Macaroni said he’s unfazed, acknowledging the toll that the attacks take on him but insisted that he will never compromise his principles for the sake of acceptance.

“Do I get tired of the constant attacks on my person? Yes!” he admitted. “But please do not think for a second that I will betray my conscience and be a part of your selfishness because I want you to stop attacking me.”

Persecondnews recalls that Macaroni was a vocal participant in the #EndSARS protests of 2020, a movement that sought to end police brutality in Nigeria.

When the protests were met with violent crackdowns, particularly the Lekki Toll Gate shooting, many activists, including Mr. Macaroni, held the state government accountable.

His activism did not stop at online rants; he put himself on the front lines.

In February 2021, he was among those arrested for protesting the reopening of the Lekki Toll Gate, a site that had become symbolic of the tragic events of October 20, 2020.

The harrowing experience of being detained and reportedly tortured by security forces was said to have deepened his distrust of the authorities.

Since then, Mr. Macaroni has maintained a critical stance on governance in Lagos and beyond. He has refused to engage with politicians he believes were complicit in the injustices of the #EndSARS era.

However, his actions have drawn mixed reactions with some people seeing his defiance as a noble stand against impunity, while others argue that dialogue and engagement would be more productive.

Nonetheless, Mr. Macaroni remains unmoved by such arguments, believing that silence or reconciliation without accountability would be a betrayal of the cause he has championed.

“You all continue to do what you have to do… but remember that this country is all that we have,” he urged. His statement serves as a reminder that beyond personal conflicts, the larger issue at hand is Nigeria’s future.

For him, the struggle for justice and good governance should never be sacrificed on the altar of political convenience.

He noted that his refusal to acknowledge the governor is not about hatred, nor is it a bid for attention.
