The Santiago Bernabeu was electric as Real Madrid secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over arch-rivals Atletico Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 tie.
The win marked Los Blancos’ first victory over Atletico this season, following two previous 1-1 draws in LaLiga.
Rodrygo opened the scoring for Real Madrid in the fourth minute with a stunning strike, assisted by Federico Valverde.
However, Atletico Madrid’s Julian Alvarez equalized in spectacular fashion in the 32nd minute, powering past Eduardo Camavinga on the left wing before unleashing a unstoppable shot that left Thibaut Courtois helpless.
Despite Atletico’s best efforts, Real Madrid regained the lead early in the second half through Brahim Diaz, who replaced suspended Jude Bellingham.
The victory was a significant boost for Los Blancos, who are currently three points behind league leaders Barcelona in LaLiga standings.
The rivalry between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid is one of the fiercest in Spanish football, and this match was no exception.
The two teams will face each other again in the second leg of the Champions League tie at the Metropolitano on March 12, and possibly again in the Copa del Rey final in late April.
Alvarez, who joined Atletico Madrid from Manchester City in the summer of 2024, has been in impressive form this season, scoring 23 goals for the Rojiblancos.
However, his efforts were not enough to secure a victory for Atletico Madrid, who will now have to regroup and prepare for the second leg.
