A chaotic situation was precipitated on Monday afternoon at the Lagos State House of Assembly as lawmakers and staff resisted and chased out security operatives who invaded the hallowed chamber, preventing the lawmakers from holding a plenary session.
The door to the chamber allegedly locked by security operatives were forced open at about 12:25 pm by staff and lawmakers, who were chanting solidarity songs.
The chamber was upside down as the sergeant at arms who led the new speaker in, had a hectic time restoring order.
As the lawmakers tried at about 12:45 pm to restore normalcy after forming a quorum, they passed a vote of confidence in the Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, describing the invasion of men of the Department of State Services (DSS) and Nigeria Police as rape, aberration on democracy and national embarrassment.
At its plenary, the House, with 36 members in attendance, called on the state’s Director of DSS to explain the reasons for the invasion.
The House also called on the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, to probe the invasion and brief the public on the outcome.
