In a decisive crackdown on oil theft and illicit refining, the Nigerian Navy’s Forward Operating Base in Igbokoda has successfully dismantled nine rogue refining sites in Obenla community, Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State.

The operation also resulted in the destruction of 20,000 litres of stolen crude oil and 15,000 litres of illicitly refined diesel.

This operation, carried out on January 6, 2025, following credible intelligence, according to Navy Captain Aliyu Usman, Commander of the Base on Thursday.

The Nigerian Navy’s efforts to stop all acts of crude oil theft and illegal refining within the Nigerian environment have yielded significant results.

He said the discovery of the nine illegal refining sites within the Obenla sea sites is a testament to the Navy’s commitment to cleaning up the environment and preventing illegal activities.

Persecondnews reports that the suspects could not be apprehended as they fled the scene before the arrival of naval operatives.

“The Navy has been working tirelessly to disrupt the activities of oil thieves and economic saboteurs, who have been causing significant economic and environmental damage to the country.

“The success of this operation is a testament to the Navy’s dedication to protecting the nation’s resources and environment,” he also said.

The Commander of the Base, Navy Captain Aliyu Usman, also seized the opportunity to sensitize the residents of the Obenla community on the dangers of harbouring illegal activities.

He advised criminals to engage in legitimate businesses and shun criminalities, emphasizing that the Nigerian Navy will not relent in its efforts to go after oil thieves.
