In a historic parliamentary vote, Gen. Joseph Aoun, Lebanon’s army chief, has been elected president, filling a power vacuum that lasted over two years.
He secured 99 out of 128 votes in the second round, announced Lebanon’s Speaker Nabih Berri, after falling short of a majority in the first round earlier today.
Aoun, a 60-year-old career soldier, has made history by becoming the fifth Lebanese army commander to be elected president.
As commander of the Lebanese Armed Forces since 2017, he has played a crucial role in maintaining stability and security in Lebanon.
He has led battles against ISIS and other militant groups, and has been a strong advocate for the country’s military and its people.
