Last Saturday, Chidimma Adetshina turned disappointment into triumph as she was crowned Miss Universe Africa and Oceania at the 73rd Miss Universe pageant in Mexico.
The South Africa-born law student and model, representing her father’s homeland of Nigeria, overcame adversity and emerged as a beacon of resilience and grace on the global stage.
Adetshina’s path to international recognition was far from smooth. In August, she withdrew from the top 10 finalists of Miss South Africa following xenophobic attacks on social media targeting her Nigerian heritage.
Three months later, she stunned the world by securing the first runner-up position at Miss Universe 2024, a victory that also crowned her Miss Universe Africa and Oceania.
The ultimate title went to Denmark’s Victoria Kjær Theilvig, who made history as the first Danish contestant to win Miss Universe.
Theilvig succeeds Sheynnis Palacios of Nicaragua as the reigning Miss Universe.
This year’s pageant was monumental for Africa, with a record-breaking 18 contestants from the continent competing.
Out of 125 participants globally, Miss Mexico, Miss Thailand, and Miss Venezuela rounded out the top five as second, third, and fourth runners-up, respectively.
