Nigeria vs. Libya: CAF Pres. vows to address unethical sportsmanship issues in African football

"CAF prioritizes treating visiting teams with respect and dignity, emphasizing fairness in competition"

The President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Patrice Motsepe, has assured that a thorough investigation is underway regarding the controversy surrounding Nigeria’s AFCON qualifier against Libya.

During a press conference following the 46th Ordinary General Assembly in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on Tuesday, Motsepe emphasized CAF’s zero-tolerance policy towards unsportsmanlike behavior.

The Nigerian national team faced numerous challenges in Libya, including flight redirection, 18-hour airport delays, and logistical issues affecting team preparation.

Players like Troost Ekong, Victor Osimhen, and Kenneth Omeruo expressed concerns over player safety and fair treatment.

Motsepe refrained from directly commenting on the Nigeria-Libya situation, citing ongoing investigations.

He, however, restated that CAF will not tolerate a lack of sportsmanship, pointing out persistent problems with poor treatment of visiting teams.

“Too many stories have been told of national teams or football clubs spending hours at airports, asked for nonexistent documents,” Motsepe said.

CAF prioritizes treating visiting teams with respect and dignity, emphasizing fairness in competition.

Motsepe praised nations showing respect to visiting teams and vowed stricter measures to prevent similar incidents.

“If regulations are violated, we will take action,” he assured.
