Following the swiftness of security operatives, some of the sports journalists kidnapped while travelling to Uyo, Akwa Ibom State capital, to cover the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier between the Super Eagles and Libya’s Mediterranean Knights, have been released.

According to Persecondnews, Nigerian security operatives exerted pressure on the kidnappers, resulting in the release of the abducted journalists, primarily photojournalists, from the Anambra/Imo area.

The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) announced in a statement on Thursday that six of the kidnapped journalists have regained their freedom, and efforts are currently underway to secure the release of the remaining individual.

SWAN President Isaiah Benjamin and Secretary-General Ikenna Okonkwo have commended the Nigerian Army and the Police for their prompt action, which led to the release of the journalists.

The organization has urged its members to remain calm and continue with their professional duties without fear, while maintaining regular communication with SWAN state chapters.

This incident highlights the risks faced by journalists in Nigeria but also demonstrates the effectiveness of collaborative efforts between security agencies and media organizations in ensuring their safety.

SWAN has reiterated its commitment to the welfare and well-being of its members, emphasizing its dedication to supporting journalists in their professional endeavours.
