Top Nigerian dignitaries, including former presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, and the Governor of Abia State, Alex Otti, were among those who graced the funeral ceremony of Nigeria’s beloved music icon, Onyeka Onwenu.

The ceremony marked the end of an era, as the nation bid farewell to the woman fondly known as the “Elegant Stallion.”

Onyeka Onwenu, whose voice and grace captivated millions, passed away on July 30, 2024, at Reddington Hospital in Ikeja.

The iconic singer and actress collapsed during an event honouring Dr. Stella Okoli, the Managing Director of Emzor Pharmaceuticals.

Her sudden passing sent shockwaves through the nation, with many struggling to come to terms with the loss of such a towering figure.

At the funeral service held at the Fountain of Life Church in Ilupeju, Lagos State, the atmosphere was thick with emotion.

As the service progressed, tears flowed freely as tributes poured in for Onyeka.

“She was more than just a musician; she was a mother to us all,” said Peter Obi, in an emotion-laden laden speech.

“Onyeka’s passion for Nigeria was unmatched, and her commitment to justice and fairness will be deeply missed. The void she leaves behind is impossible to fill.”

Following the service, Onyeka was laid to rest in a private burial at a serene vault in Ikoyi, Lagos.

The quiet dignity of the burial reflected the elegance that she carried throughout her life.
