A faction of the Rivers State House of Assembly loyal to Gov. Siminalayi Fubara has elected its own speaker.
He is Mr. Victor Jumbo, who will now lead the four lawmakers loyal to the governor.
Jumbo represents Bonny Constituency in the House of Assembly.
His election came on the heels of a renewed political crisis, with the 24 lawmakers loyal to Fubara’s estranged godfather, Nyesom Wike, the FCT Minister, threatening impeachment.
The former factional speaker, Edison Ehie, who was the leader of the pro-Fubara lawmakers, later resigned membership in the Assembly following President Bola Tinubu’s intervention in the feud between Fubara and Wike.
Fubara later appointed Ehie as his Chief of Staff.
A Rivers State Government House source in Port Harcourt spoke on condition of anonymity, confirming the development.
The source said: “Yes, I can confirm to you that Hon. Victor Oko Jumbo has just emerged as the new Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly.
“His colleagues elected him during their sitting in Port Harcourt this afternoon. That is all I can say for now.”
Details later…
