Former Military Head of State Yakubu Gowon voiced his support for President Bola Tinubu on Saturday, noting that the President is working diligently across various sectors to advance the nation.

Following a meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Gowon told reporters his visit was intended to acknowledge Tinubu’s commitment to navigating Nigeria through its current challenges.

“I came to see him and express my appreciation for the work he is doing for the country.

“During the meeting, we discussed the various efforts the President is making and the progress Nigeria is recording,” he said.

Persecondnews recalls that Gowon, who led Nigeria between 1966 and 1975, remains one of the country’s most prominent elder statesmen and has continued to advocate for national unity, peace and reconciliation.

The elder statesman rejected the idea that the President should focus on just a few specific sectors, arguing instead that effective national leadership requires a comprehensive, multi-dimensional approach.

When questioned on potential areas for improvement, Gowon maintained that Tinubu is already performing across the political, economic, and social landscapes.

“Leadership requires attending to every facet of national development simultaneously,” he noted.

Regarding security—one of Nigeria’s most significant hurdles—Gowon expressed confidence that the administration is taking intentional steps to resolve the crisis.

“Of course, security remains one of the major challenges facing the country today, but the President is making every effort to address it for the benefit of all Nigerians,” he said.

“As the leader, he has to protect Nigeria’s interests in all areas, and I am satisfied with the steps being taken.”

Gowon also urged Nigerians to trust the government’s handling of the current situation in the country, stressing that the administration is managing national issues responsibly.

“Regarding the current situation in the country, I believe the government, under the leadership of Mr. President, is in the best position to manage it,” he stated.

“From what I can see, the administration is handling the matter carefully and responsibly, without creating further problems for the nation.”

The former leader expressed optimism that the government’s efforts would ultimately lead to peace and stability across the country.

“I am confident that the government is doing everything possible to ensure that Nigeria ultimately achieves the peace and stability that the country deserves.”
