Gov. Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State has won the ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the November 16 governorship election, polling 48,569 votes.
Aiyedatiwa, the late Gov. Rotimi Akeredolu’s Deputy, defeated his closest challengers — Mayowa Akinfolarin who garnered 15,343 votes and Olusola Oke who scored 14,915 votes.
Aiyedatiwa won in 16 of the 18 local government areas of the state while Oke won only in Ilaje local government area.
Kogi governor Usman Ododo and Chairman of the Governorship Primary Election Committee, announced the results in the early hours of Monday.
The election was cancelled in Ifedore council area due to violence.
Other aspirants who participated in the primary are Mr Isaac Kekemeke, Mr Olusoji Ehinlanwo, Mr Olugbenga Edema, Sen. Jimoh Ibrahim, Mr Diran Iyantan; Prof. Dayo Faduyile, Dr. Ifeoluwa Oyedele.
Others are Mrs Funmilayo Waheed-Adekojo, Mr Adewale Akinterinwa; Mr Olusola Oke, Mr Ohunyeye Felix; Mr Morayo Lebi, Mrs Judith Omogoroye and Mr Jimi Odimayo.
In his acceptance speech, Aiyedatiwa expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for creating enabling environment for the peaceful conduct of the governorship primary.
He also appreciated the national and state working committee of the party for ensuring that the “best candidate emerged” as the party’s standard bearer for the November governorship poll.
Meanwhile, some aspirants have criticized the conduct of the primary, alleging violence and non-arrival of materials and officials in some wards.
Protest also rocked the APC secretariat in Akure, the state capital, on Sunday following the declaration of the results with calls for the cancellation of the exercise.
