The mob pounced on the policemen after their Hilux van crushed a woman, a student, and a motorcyclist in front of the nearby Ikpeshi Grammar School.
Persecondnews gathered that the Toyota Hilux van carrying the four police officers hit the motorcycle carrying a woman and child when it was on escort duty with the ex-lawmaker.
“The motorcyclist and passengers – woman and the child – perished instantly during the incident,” a source said.
The policemen were reportedly a part of Police Mobile Force 19 in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
An inspector and a sergeant were beaten to death by the mob while the other two cops were saved by the vigilance group.
“The rider and passenger perished instantly during the process, and as a result, the enraged crowd attacked the policemen, killing Inspector Abubaka Fakku and Sergeant Elisha John while two others are being treated at Ifejola Hospital, Igarra,” the police source said.
Confirming the incident on Sunday, the spokesman for the Edo State Police Command, SP Chidi Nwabuzor, said details would be provded later.
He said the policemen were members of Police Mobile Force 19, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, and not personnel of the Edo State command.
