Oyo State Gov. Seyi Makinde has provided a crucial update on the devastating explosion that rocked Ibadan on Tuesday evening, resulting in the destruction of houses and injuring approximately 77 people, with two reported casualties.

Makinde, who promptly visited the scene late in the night, expressed deep concern over the incident.

He said: “We visited the scene of the explosion which occurred at about 7.44 p.m. yesterday in Bodija, Ibadan. The unfortunate event claimed lives, caused injuries to residents, and left properties damaged.

Makinde assured that first responders and relevant agencies within Oyo State have been deployed for comprehensive search and rescue operations, which will continue throughout the night.

The response to the disaster included the deployment of earth-moving equipment, ambulances, emergency lights, and security personnel to the scene.

Makinde said injured individuals are receiving treatment and being moved to public and private hospitals in Ibadan, where medical personnel are on standby to offer necessary assistance.

The governor personally visited the University College Hospital (UCH) to see some of the injured victims.

Makinde revealed that there are 77 injured victims so far, with most already treated and discharged, along with two unfortunate fatalities.

He extended condolences to the bereaved families and announced that the government would cover the medical bills of all victims.

“Temporary accommodation will also be provided for those whose houses were affected, and support will be given to help them rebuild their lives.

“Preliminary investigations by security agencies indicated that illegal miners occupying one of the houses in Bodija had stored explosive devices, causing the blast. Investigations are ongoing, and the governor assured that those found culpable would be held accountable.”

In his appeal to residents, the governor urged them to call 615 for any emergencies and to remain calm, staying away from the immediate scene to facilitate uninterrupted rescue operations.

Expressing gratitude, the governor acknowledged the efforts of first responders, security personnel, and all those assisting with the rescue operations, as well as the medical personnel attending to the injured.
