After about 134 days in custody, the immediate past Chairman of the nation’s anti-graft agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), AbdulRasheed Bawa, has finally breathed air of freedom.

Bawa, who was taken into custody by the Department of State Service (DSS), was received by his family at his Abuja residence on late Wednesday evening, a videos that has gone viral has shown.

Confirming the release of Bawa, Dr Peter Afunaya, the DSS spokesman, said in a terse statement:”DSS confirms release of former EFCC chairman, Abdulrasheed Bawa, a few hours ago (today 25th October 2023).”

Persecondnews recalls that Bawa, who was appointed by ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, was arrested on June 14 after President Bola Tinubu suspended him from office.

No reason, however, has been given for the arrest and he has yet to be arraigned in court.

Human right activists, well-meaning people and lawyers had asked the DSS to release the EFCC Chairman or charge him to court.

Meanwhile, Mr Ola Olukoyede and Mr Muhammad Hammajoda have been appointed the EFCC Chairman and the Secretary for the Commission.

A Presidency statement said the appointment of the new EFCC Chairman followed the resignation of Bawa.

About two weeks ago, Olukoyede and Hammajoda assumed offices.
