1.1k

The organised labour protest took a near-violent turn on Wednesday in Abuja, the nation’s seat of power, as angry protesters forced their into the National Assembly premises by pulling down the gates of the complex.

Persecondnews reports that the move by the angry protesters came after the security operatives stationed at the building refused to open the gate to the protesters led by the union leaders to present their grievances to the leadership of the House.

In a now-viral video, the protesters could be seen pushing the gate back and forth before pulling it down.

Following the development, the senators reportedly entered a closed-door session immediately.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio is expected to address the protesters ahead of today’s screening of ministerial nominees.

The Organised Labour including the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), and their affiliate unions today kicked off a protest in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Lagos, Kano, and other states of the Federation on Wednesday.

The protesters in their hundreds converged at the Unity Fountain before marching to the NASS Complex.

Persecondnews reports that the Acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, had on Tuesday appealed to the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) to ensure that the demonstrations remain peaceful and not hijacked by miscreants.

He further affirmed that the Police would not tolerate any act of vandalism, gangsterism, or extortion that threatens public peace and order.
