Host Delta State wins first gold medal at 2022 National Sports Festival

The 21st National Sports Festival, tagged Delta 2022 has got underway in Asaba, with the Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Sunday Dare, joining host Gov. Ifeanyi Okowa to receive the Torch of Unity.

Persecondnews reports that over 16,000 athletes from the 36 states of the federation and the FCT will be vying for medals at the 11-day national sporting fiesta.

Team Delta clinched their first gold medal in the cycling event, replicating same feet like they did in Edo 2021 opening day defeating 12 states to pick up gold.

Team Oyo, Lagos,and Plateau couldn’t match the cycling prowess of Delta  cyclist, while Team Edo and Rivers  experienced a topsy-turvy start as they were disqualified from the event after their failure to meet minimum female cyclist required for the race.

Earlier this week, the ministry of youth and sport development notified that the festival will return to full strength of athletes, following a decrease in the last edition due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Persecondnews confirmed that Vice- President Yemi Osibanjo (SAN) will officially declare the sport festival open on Wednesday at the Stephen Keshi Stadium.

An official of the LOC disclosed that fans will witness a mixture of entertainment and cultural display.

The last edition in Edo witnessed Team Delta winning the festival with an astonishing 158 Gold , 116 Silver and 110 Bronze.
