Insurgency, banditry: Provide timely intelligence to security agencies, Buhari pleads with Nigerians

In a bid to win the war against insurgency, banditry and secure the country, President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday made a passionate plea to Nigerian to lend support to the fight by volunteering timely information to the security agencies.

 

Buhari said with the necessary equipment being provided the Nigerian  troops, citizens should also provide timely intelligence for a successful prosecution of the war.

 

Describing the nation’s security challenges as protracted, the president still assured that his administration would do everything possible to end the menace.

 

“Security is a protracted challenge but we are not relenting in our efforts. We equipping the military. We encourage localities to enhance their intelligence gathering and timely remitting to the security agencies,’’ Buhari told the visiting Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) members led by the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar.

 

On the economy, Buhari restated his administration’s commitment to diversifying the economy and to reduce poverty.

 

“We are diversifying the economy to reduce poverty, we are combating corruption. We will continue to promote religious freedom as a constitutional responsibility.

 

“ If the country must work, we must continue to work together in spite of ethnic and religious differences. It is my solemn decision to be fair to all in the society,’’ he said.

 

On anti-graft war, he said: “The war against corruption is relentless,the  government will continue to discharge its constitutional responsibilities and also ensure harmony in the country.’’

 

Speaking on the recently launched Alternate School Programme (ASP), the president asked the leaders to give it support.

As part of efforts to curtail the spread of COVID-19, Buhari said government would soon purchase the vaccines but pleaded with NCSIA to help educate the people on the need to take the COVID-19 vaccines.

 

Sultan Abubakar expressed satisfaction with the successes recorded by the military in the fight against insurgency in the Northeast and called for reinforcement in dealing with banditry in Zamfara, Katsina, Sokoto and Northcentral.

 

On the appointment of the new service chiefs, the monarch urged Nigerians to support the new leadership of the armed forces, appealing  that governors should cooperate with the Federal Government to ensure the success of military operations across the troubled spots in the country.

 

He urged religious leaders and leaders to eschew inflammatory comments that could heat up the polity and worsen insecurity in the country.

 

Persecondnews reports that in attendance at the meeting which held at the Presidential Villa were the Etsu Nupe, Yahaya Abubakar, the National Security Adviser, retired Maj.-Gen. Babagana Mongunu, and the Chief of Staff to the President, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari.

Other include the Ministers of Information, Interior, and the Federal Capital Territory.
