The Socio-Economic Rights Accountability Project (SERAP) Monday morning in a series of tweets exposed multi million Naira fraud and infractions inside the Federal Ministry of Interior and the Federal Fire Service, Abuja.

According to SERAP, the Federal Fire Service, Abuja, reportedly claimed it spent N19,500,000.00 as rent for the Comptroller-General’s residence at Sun-city Estate, Abuja. But it was discovered that the money was spent to pay a rent for 2 years for a Law Firm, not the Comptroller-General’s residence.

SERAP also claimed that the Federal Fire Service, Abuja, reportedly spent another N16,107,000.00 for the supply of diesel and petrol but failed to provide any supporting documents for the spending, contrary to Financial Regulation 603 and Financial Regulation 234.

It was concluded, however that the Fire Service financial records were riddled with so many bookkeeping deficiencies, irregularities, and errors that “the Auditor-General wants the money recovered.”

The Federal Ministry of Interior, Abuja, reportedly paid N6,766,902.00 in 2016 to 13 officers as estacode and other allowances to travel overseas to attend meeting and program, but the spending was not approved. The Ministry also failed to provide any supporting document for it, SERAP tweeted.

The Federal Ministry of Interior, Abuja, reportedly spent N3,793,350.00 to buy 9 items but there was no evidence of the items, contrary to Financial Regulations 2402(i) and 2802. The Auditor-General wants the money recovered.

SERAP is a nonprofit, nonpartisan, legal & advocacy org. devoted to promoting transparency, accountability & respect for socio-economic rights in Nigeria.
