Embassy’s bust of illegalities triggers attack

The attack on the Nigerian Embassy in Jakarta, Indonesia, by some disgruntled and unscrupulous Nigerians is sponsored by some Nigerian community leaders who are finding it difficult to continue to extort their fellow citizens, investigations by Persecondnews have revealed.

They exploit fellow Nigerians by acting as agents in the quest to get official documents from the Embassy and in their frustration, they have resorted to instigating them against the Embassy.

According to Per Second News check by its U.S. office, documents issuance cost as little as R1.5million but the extortionists and touts charge their fellow citizens as much as between R25m and R40m, claiming that it is what the Embassy is charging.

In busting their illegal business, a source at the Embassy said: “The Embassy insists that applicants need not go through any agent to get its documents. This illegal source of livelihood has been on the wane, and as such the perpetrators are ready to say and do anything against the Embassy and Nigerian govt.’’

The Federal Government has condemned the attack on the Nigerian Embassy in Jakarta, describing the act as disgraceful and criminal.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Geoffrey Onyeama, said on his Tweeter handle @Geoffrey Onyeama on Friday: “Absolutely deplorable and disgraceful criminal behaviour by Nigerian hooligans, who without justification, attacked the Nigerian Embassy in Jakarta, Indonesia today. Totally unacceptable behaviour’’.

He promised that perpetrators would be identified and punished accordingly.

Also, it was gathered that such Nigerians had problem with host Immigration Department but they feel the Embassy was not protecting them enough as “they want the Embassy to protect their illegalities and excesses’’.

“ Some of these individuals are also responsible for setting up host immigration officials against their fellow citizens who they know are ready to pay any amount to continue to stay in Indonesia.

“The Embassy has been stemming all these wrong doings in the bud. The Embassy met with the Head of the Indonesian Immigration on matters of immigration as it affect Nigeria and was also in the forefront of leading African Missions to complain about the high handedness of immigration towards Africans,’’ the source said.

Per Second News learnt that a meeting of officials of the Nigerian Embassy with the Chief of Immigration in Jakarta with some reasonable members of the Nigerian Community on their Consular problems, it did not go down well with the community leaders.

“All these efforts are anathema to some community leaders who are living off the illegal extortion of their fellow citizens,’’ the source also said.
