Polytechnic student demands N1bn damages after soldier’s bullet chopped off his leg

About two-and-a half years after he was amputated following a soldier’s bullet that hit his leg, a polytechnic student, Emmanuel Madubuezi, is demanding N1 billion compensation and collateral damages from the Nigerian Army.

Madubuezi was on board a commercial tricycle on September 14, 2017 heading to Port Harcourt Polytechnic when he was hit by a stray bullet on his hand and left leg.

The bullet also pierced through his left leg to hit an elderly woman sitting next to him.

His lawyer, Mr Tope Akinyode, announced in Port Harcourt that a suit is being instituted against the Nigerian Army over the shooting.

According to him, since the near fatal shooting by the soldier, Madubuezi and his family had been abandoned the Army authorities.

Several weeks after the incident, the student could not be treated in three different hospitals until his leg was later amputated at the Holy Trinity Hospital, Port Harcourt on Sept. 25, 2017.

Akinyode said following instructions from the student and his family, he would be heading to the court to file the suit before the week runs out.

“We will be asking the court to compel the Nigerian Army to pay N1bn compensation,’’ he said in a statement, accusing the Nigerian Army of failing to pay the hospital bills of Madubuezi.

“When the victim wrote the Nigerian Army to demand N150 million compensation, the army authorities vowed not to give him a dime.

“In the letter of response to Madubuezi, the army authorities admitted that the victim was indeed shot by its operatives and that the conduct was highly unprofessional,’’ Akinyode said.
