Aaliyah passed away 17 years ago, but her music left an impact that resonates with many of us just as strong today as it did back then.

Today would have been the late singer’s 39th birthday. Famous friends, like Missy Elliot, paid their respects by sharing memories and photos.

In 2001 the talented young songstress was killed while her career was peaking when a small plane she was a passenger on crashed shortly after taking off from the Bahamas.

Aaliyah an unstoppable icon whose groundbreaking work in R&B music and film inspired millions across the globe. Today we join her countless fans in celebrating her.

She was 22.
