755 U.S Diplomats Must Leave Russia, Says Putin

1.1k

[dropcap]R[/dropcap]ussian President Vladimir Putin said Sunday that 755 US diplomats must leave his country, after Moscow announced it would expel American staff in retaliation for tough new sanctions from Washington.

“755 people must stop their activities in Russia, he said in an interview with Russian TV.

“More than a thousand people were working and are still working” at the US embassy and consulates.”

The Russian foreign ministry had earlier demanded the US cut its diplomatic presence in Russia by September to 455 — the same number Moscow has in the US.

U.S Republicans and Democrats have pushed for more sanctions partly as a response to conclusions by U.S. intelligence agencies that the Kremlin interfered in the 2016 presidential election campaign to help Trump.
