Obi Cubana’s fears: No one in my family lives up to 80 years

Nigerian billionaire Obinna Iyiegbu, popularly known as Obi Cubana, has revealed a haunting personal fear that has continued to shape his life and actions.

In an emotional interview with monitored by Per Secon News, the socialite shared that no one in his family has ever reached the age of 80—a harsh reality he said has filled him with fears.

Cubana explained how this grim family history weighed heavily on him.

According to him, his father passed away at 66, his father’s younger brother died at 75, and his grandfather never lived beyond 78.

“In my family, I am saying it for the first time: nobody has lived up to 80. My father died at 66, my father’s brother died at 75, my grandfather died at 78,” he confessed during the interview.

“I told my mum, you will break this. I told her to break it if it’s a generational curse or something.”

For years, Cubana clung to the belief that his mother would be the one to defy the odds. Every birthday became a moment of celebration and hope, as he encouraged her to reach this elusive milestone.

But that hope was shattered when she passed away on December 31, 2020, just shy of her 79th birthday.

He recalled how the devastating loss brought his greatest fear to life.

“My mother died at 78 and a half, and we were all looking forward to her 80th birthday. But what happened, happened. So let’s celebrate her. At least she almost broke it.”

Despite his heartbreak, the top socialite said he decided to honour his mother in the most lavish way possible that made him the talk of the town for weeks as the burial became a national spectacle, drawing attention across Nigeria for its opulence and grandeur.

The event became the talk of the town, with one of the most notable moments being when Obi Cubana received a staggering 246 cows from friends and well-wishers.

The burial was not just a display of wealth but also a tribute to his mother’s life and his attempt to confront the sorrow of generational grief.

“I told her I would give her a burial nobody would ever forget,” Cubana revealed, reflecting on the promises he made.

Though she never reached 80, the funeral was his way of ensuring her memory lived on in a way that transcended the curse that haunted his family.
