The stage is set for a thrilling encounter between Nigeria and Benin Republic in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, Akwa Ibom capital.

Benin’s coach, Gernot Rohr, has expressed confidence about his team’s chances of making history by qualifying for their first-ever World Cup.

Rohr noted the significance of the match, saying, “The game against Nigeria is like a final for us, and we have a good chance to reach the World Cup.”

He reflected on his time with Nigeria, recalling the wonderful memories of qualifying for the 2018 World Cup.

“The memories from my time in Nigeria are wonderful, especially qualifying for the 2018 World Cup with two games to spare — but that is in the past. This is a new challenge, and I’m focused on doing it with my Benin team.”

Rohr, however, is focused on the present challenge with Benin, aiming to lead them to World Cup qualification for the first time in their history.

Nigeria is currently third in Group C with 14 points, while Benin tops the group with 17 points.

Persecondnews reports that a win or draw would guarantee Benin’s qualification for the World Cup, while Nigeria needs to win and rely on favorable results from other matches to keep their hopes alive.

The match promises to be an intense and closely contested affair, with both teams eager to emerge victorious.
