Just In: Tinubu Seeks Senate’s Confirmation of Amupitan as INEC Chairman

President Tinubu has requested the Senate to confirm Prof. Joash Amupitan as the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, read the letter of request on Tuesday, October 14, during plenary alongside other communications to the Senate from the President for approval of appointments.

According to the letter, the request is in line with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution.

Persecondnews reports that the request has been referred to the Committee of the Whole.

Persecondnews had reported that the Council of State gave unanimous approval to Prof. Amupitan’s nomination on Thursday, October 9.

His appointment follows the expiration of the tenure of the Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, who was appointed in 2015 by the late President Muhammadu Buhari.
