Breaking: 2026 World Cup Qualifier: Super Eagles Beat Rwanda 1-0 in Uyo

2.5k

The Super Eagles have broken their six-match winless streak in home World Cup qualifiers with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Rwanda in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

This significant win marks the first time Nigeria has tasted victory on home soil in a World Cup qualifier since their 2-0 defeat of Liberia in September 2021.

Persecondnews reports that Tolu Arokodare scored the only goal of the match in the 51st minute, just five minutes after coming on as a substitute.

His goal not only sealed the win for Nigeria but also reignited their hopes of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup.

Despite a frustrating first half which saw Victor Osimhen substituted after a knock, the Super Eagles showed resilience and determination, with Arokodare’s winner sparking jubilation among the fans at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium.

The victory has seen Nigeria climb to third place in Group C with 10 points from seven matches.

South Africa tops the group with 16 points, followed by Benin Republic with 11 points.

Rwanda, on the other hand, has eight points.

With this win, the Super Eagles have kept their World Cup qualification dreams alive, but they know they have a tough task ahead.

Nigeria’s next challenge will be against South Africa in Bloemfontein, a match that the team will approach with utmost seriousness.

Given the high stakes, the Super Eagles will need to put up a spirited performance if they hope to keep their qualification hopes alive.
