K1’s fate hangs in the balance as Nigerians demand legal action despite apology

1.3k

Fuji legend Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, popularly known as K1 De Ultimate, may have tendered a public apology over his controversial airport incident, but the outcry surrounding him refuses to die down.

While some voices are calling for calm and forgiveness, a louder section of Nigerians — including industry stakeholders — insists that mere contrition is not enough, and that he must face the full force of the law.

The incident, which allegedly disrupted flight operations, has drawn fierce debate online and offline. On X (formerly Twitter), many Nigerians have pointed to Section 469 of the Criminal Code Act, which clearly states that obstructing or impeding the movement of an aircraft is a misdemeanour punishable by up to two years’ imprisonment.

“This is not about music, this is about the law,” said Abuja-based lawyer Aisha Mohammed.

“If an ordinary citizen can go to jail for this, then K1 should also face trial. Anything less will confirm what we already fear, that in Nigeria, there are two sets of laws.”

Lagos aviation consultant Captain Ade Olatunji was even more direct.: “The moment someone interferes with airport operations, it becomes a national security issue. Apologies are fine, but they don’t erase the offence. The law must be applied to deter others.”

Entertainment critic who didn’t want his name mentioned echoed the sentiment: “We can’t keep giving celebrities a pass because of their fame or connections. If we allow this to slide, the message to the public is that the powerful are untouchable.”

“Yes, mistakes were made, but he has apologized. We should learn to forgive and move on instead of destroying one of Nigeria’s cultural icons”, said an X user.

Similarly, a popular music promoter and promoter appealed for leniency.

“K1 is a national treasure. Let’s not drag this to the point where it becomes vindictive. The no-fly ban is enough punishment. Let the man go and focus on his music.”

With the six-month no-fly ban already in place, Nigerians are now watching closely to see whether the Federal Government will push for prosecution or quietly close the matter.
