United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has strongly condemned the recent bloody attacks in Benue, North Central Nigeria, which resulted in the deaths of numerous civilians.
Guterres emphasized the need to apprehend those responsible for the violence.
According to Persecondnews, the brutal assaults on the Yelewata community occurred while residents were asleep, leading to scores of fatalities and the displacement of thousands.
Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesperson for the Secretary-General, stated, “We’re monitoring the situation. The Secretary-General condemns the killing of innocent civilians, including in Nigeria, and we hope that those responsible for this violence will be found and apprehended.”
Earlier, President Bola Tinubu also condemned the ongoing violence in Benue, urging all leaders and residents to embrace peace, love, and mutual understanding.
President Tinubu is scheduled to travel to Benue on Wednesday as part of renewed efforts to foster peace and address the persistent conflict affecting communities in the state.
During his visit, he plans to meet with various stakeholders, including traditional rulers, political, religious, and community leaders, as well as youth groups, to seek lasting solutions to the hostilities.
The President extended his sincere sympathy to the victims’ families and all those affected by the crisis.
