Tinubu’s Democracy Day Speech: Security Beefed Up at National Assembly

907

Security measures have been significantly escalated at the National Assembly complex in Abuja as President Bola Tinubu is slated to address a joint session of the Senate and House of Representatives at noon today, Thursday, June 12.

The President is expected to deliver his Democracy Day address, a crucial “state of the nation” speech, in commemoration of this year’s observance.

The 2025 Democracy Day, with the theme “Consolidating on the Gains of Nigeria’s Democracy: Necessity of Enduring Reforms,” is commemorative of the nation’s 26 years of uninterrupted democracy following the termination of military rule in 1999.

Persecondnews recalls that Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, a retired Army general and Head of State, was inaugurated as the President, who called the shots from May 29, 1999 to May 29, 2007.

A combined team of security agencies, including personnel from the Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Police Force, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), have been strategically deployed at all primary entry points leading to the National Assembly.

As early as 7:30 a.m. this morning, heightened routine security checks were observed at the gates, with vehicular movement being rigorously monitored and restricted.

Access to the complex has been curtailed, with special accreditation protocols implemented for journalists, security personnel, and essential staff on duty.

This enhanced security deployment follows the President’s cancellation of a previously scheduled national broadcast set for 7 a.m. today.

According to a statement released by Segun Imohiosen, Director of Information and Public Relations in the Presidency, President Tinubu will now deliver his Democracy Day address directly from the National Assembly.

It said: “Due to H.E. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, scheduled attendance at the National Assembly Joint Session, the Presidential National Broadcast on June 12 has been cancelled.

“President Bola Ahmed will deliver his address from the National Assembly. All other plans are in order as announced earlier.”
