Flying Eagles Soar to Semifinals, Qualify for U-20 World Cup

1.2k

Nigeria’s U-20 national team, the Flying Eagles, has secured a spot in the semifinals at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations U-20 tournament, qualifying for the FIFA U-20 World Cup after a thrilling penalty shootout victory over defending champions Senegal.

The atmosphere at the Suez Canal Stadium in Ismailia, Egypt crackled with tension as the quarterfinal clash stretched through 120 goalless minutes, neither side able to break the deadlock.

The contest then dramatically shifted to a penalty shootout, where Nigeria clinched a 3-1 victory.

Goalkeeper Ebenezer Harcourt proved to be the hero of the hour, decisively saving two penalties while another shot ricocheted off the crossbar.

Precious Benjamin, Emmanuel Chukwu, and Israel Ayuma successfully converted their spot kicks, while Seydi Diouck scored Senegal’s only penalty.

The Flying Eagles dominated possession, controlling 53% of the ball, and registered 15 total shots, surpassing Senegal’s 10 attempts.

Even though both sides created several opportunities throughout regulation and extra time, the elusive goal remained out of reach, ultimately pushing the tense quarterfinal showdown into a nerve-wracking penalty shootout.

This victory marks Nigeria’s eighth consecutive quarter-final win at the U-20 AFCON under the current format, and they have never been eliminated at this stage of the competition.

Team captain Daniel Bameyi praised his team’s composure, saying, “We knew what was at stake — World Cup qualification and a step closer to the title. We stayed calm, followed our plan, and now we’re back where we belong, on the world stage”.

The win also confirms Nigeria’s return to the FIFA U-20 World Cup, their first qualification since 2019 and 15th appearance overall, extending their record as one of Africa’s most decorated youth teams.

The Flying Eagles will now prepare for their semifinal showdown, aiming to secure a record-extending eighth U-20 AFCON title.
