Anambra 2025: Soludo emerges as APGA candidate, PDP, LP postpone primaries

Ahead of the November 8 Anambra State governorship election, incumbent Governor Chukwuma Soludo has secured the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) governorship ticket.

Persecondnews reports that Soludo won the party’s primary held on Saturday at Dr. Alex Ekwueme Square, Awka, the state capital amid tight security and under the watch of the officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Chief Uchenna Nwegbo, the Chairman of the APGA Primary Election Electoral Committee, while presenting Soludo with the party’s nomination certificate, said that the process adhered to the Electoral Act of 2022.

He said: “Total delegates for this election is 3,260; 3,175 are accredited delegates. 3,172 is the total votes, while 4 votes were invalid.

“The total yes-votes garnered by the governor is 3,168, while there were no no-votes.

“So, in line with the INEC guidelines and with the powers conferred on me as the chief returning officer for this election, I, Uche Nwegbo, hereby declare the governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, as returned, as the candidate of our party.”

Delivering his vote of thanks, Soludo praised APGA officials for organizing what he called a well-structured exercise.

He also applauded the delegates for their orderly behaviour and thanked the people for their confidence and support.l

He said: “Never before in Anambra’s history has there been such a wide consensus. I am truly humbled, and I assure you that I will not let APGA and the people of Anambra down.

“We will continue to work to deepen our vision of infrastructure development, human capital investment, security and economic transformation.

“Anambra has not seen anything yet. Our agenda is loaded, and we will continue the progress unbroken.”

Persecondnews reports that Soludo has re-nominated Dr Onyekachi Ibezim as his running mate for the forthcoming governorship election.

Meanwhile, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has postponed its governorship primary from April 5 to April 8.

The party’s Chairman, Chidi Chidebe, confirmed the development in Awka in an interview with newsmen on Saturday.

“Our primary election will now hold on Tuesday, April 8. With the confusion in other parties, it’s clear that PDP is not the problem,” he said.

Also, the Labour Party (LP) has suspended its primary election scheduled for Saturday, April 5, 2025, indefinitely.

The acting chairman, Mr. Peter Okoye, made this known on Friday.

Persecondnews gathered that the postponement followed Friday afternoon long-awaited verdict of the Supreme Court which sacked the national chairman of the Labour Party, Julius Abure.

The Supreme Court had ordered Abure to vacate the party secretariat along with his executives at all levels.
