The 39th Women’s African Volleyball Club Championship kicked off in style on Thursday in Abuja with Nigeria’s First Lady, Sen. Oluremi Tinu, officially declaring the tournament open.

The event held at the Moshood Abiola Stadium’s Indoor Hall, is a celebration of African culture, featuring captivating music, dance and art performances that left the audience in awe.

The championship features 16 clubs from 10 African countries, highlighting the continent’s unity and the growth of volleyball.

This marks the second time Nigeria has hosted the tournament, with the first being in 1996, but it is the first time Abuja is hosting.

Sen. Tinubu, a strong advocate for women’s empowerment and sports development, was joined by top dignitaries, including CAVB President Bouchra Hajij and the Controller General of Nigeria Customs Service, Mr. Bahir Wale Adeniyi.

Persecondnews correspondent covering the championship reports that the tournament has already witnessed some thrilling matches, with Nigeria Customs Service defeating Mayo Volleyball Club of Cameroon 3-0 in the second Group A game.

Earlier in Group A, APR of Rwanda came from a set behind to beat 2021 champions Carthage of Tunisia 3-1 (18-25, 26-24, 25-23, 25-22).

The Rwandan team’s strong mental capabilities and determination paid off as they withstood the early pressure from the Tunisian side to secure a hard-fought victory.
