Just in: Amaju Pinnick Loses Bid to Retain FIFA Council Seat

1.3k

Nigeria’s Amaju Melvin Pinnick has failed to secure a second term on the FIFA Council, falling just one vote short of the required tally.

Pinnick, who was considered a strong contender, garnered 28 votes, finishing seventh in the polls.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) held its Extraordinary General Assembly on Wednesday, where elections for executive positions took place.

The top six candidates, who secured seats on the prestigious body, were Fouzi Lekjaa (49 votes), Hani Aboo Ridha (35 votes), Djibrilla Hima (35 votes), Kanizat Ibrahim (30 votes), Ahmed Yahya (29 votes), and Souleymane Waberi (29 votes).

Persecondnews reports that Pinnick’s loss means Nigeria will no longer have representation on FIFA’s top decision-making body for world football governance.

This development may have significant implications for Nigerian football, which has been a major player in African football politics.

The elections were part of CAF’s efforts to revamp its leadership and governance structures.

Patrice Motsepe, the CAF President, was re-elected unopposed for a second term, while other executive positions were also filled.
