Minister Orders Shutdown of Quack Hospital in FCT, Operator Arrested for Practicing Without License

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Mr. Nyesom Wike, has taken a strong stance against illegal health facilities in the FCT, declaring zero tolerance for their operations.

This announcement comes on the heels of the shutdown of Dada’s Clinic and Maternity, an unregistered facility in Kapwa, Gaube Community, Kuje Area Council of the FCT.

The Private Health Establishments Registration and Monitoring Committee (PHERMC) took swift action, arresting the operator of the clinic.

This move is part of a broader effort to ensure that all health facilities in the FCT meet the required standards.

According to Dr. Abubakar Ahmadu, Director Medical and Diagnostics FCT Health and Human Services Secretariat, no health facility is allowed to operate without approval from the department.

In fact, six hospitals have been closed down in 2024 for unwholesome activities, highlighting the FCT’s commitment to protecting the health and well-being of its residents.

A statement released on Monday by Minister’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Mr. Lere Olayinka, said the manager of the clinic, Sabiu, has been handed over to the authorities at the Kuje Police Station.

The statement said: “On February 2, 2025, at approximately 15:32pm, a team led by the Director, Medical and Diagnostics Department, acting on the directives of the Mandate Secretary, Health and Environment Secretariat, Dr. Adedolapo Fasawe, visited Kapwa, Gaube Community (Gaube Ward), Kuje Area Council to investigate allegations against Dada’s Clinic & Maternity Ltd.

“The facility was reported to be operating without registration and conducting medical procedures in a rented apartment unfit for healthcare services, under the guise of a Medical Outreach.

“Preliminary findings indicated that a community elder tragically passed away following a hernia operation performed at the facility.

“Additionally, multiple reports emerged of patients who barely survived procedures and required emergency medical care elsewhere.

“Upon arrival, the team identified the facility, which was located along the main road leading to the community.

“The facility was in a dilapidated and unsanitary condition—an unpainted building with burglar-proof ironwork at the entrance, but lacking windows, doors, and basic amenities such as a reception area, nursing station, bathroom, or toilet.

“The structure had four rooms and a general area, including an unfinished extension in unacceptable sanitary condition.”

During the visit, Sabiu identified himself as the health worker in charge of Dada’s Clinic & Maternity Ltd, where three patients, including an elderly person receiving intravenous infusion, were admitted, according to Olayinka.

He subsequently confessed that the clinic was operating without proper registration with the PHERMC.

It added: “All patients in the facility were confirmed to be stable and were referred to Kuje General Hospital for proper medical care.

“Consequently, the facility was sealed, and Mr. Sabiu was handed over to the Kuje Police Station at approximately 18:00 hrs for further investigation.

“The FCT Minister reiterates the administration’s commitment to ensuring safe and regulated healthcare services.
Facility accreditation is a simple process, there was no excuse for operating illegally.

“All unregistered health facilities will be sealed henceforth to protect residents from unsafe medical practices.”
