BRICS welcomes Nigeria as partner country, fostering new era of international cooperation

141

Nigeria has officially become a partner country of the BRICS economic bloc, marking a significant milestone in the country’s efforts to strengthen South-South cooperation and reform global governance.

Persecondnews reports that this development was announced by the Brazilian Foreign Ministry, with Brazil serving as the 2025 president of the bloc.

As a partner country, Nigeria will participate in special sessions of BRICS summits and foreign ministers’ meetings, as well as contribute to the group’s outcome documents.

The Senior Special Assistant to President Tinubu on New Media, Mr. O’tega Ogra, said on Sunday that the acceptance was a great step for Nigeria in the government’s effort to strengthen South-South cooperation and reform global governance.

“In a significant diplomatic milestone, Nigeria has been officially accepted as a partner country in the BRICS bloc, as announced by Brazil, the bloc’s 2025 president. This marks a major step in Nigeria’s efforts to strengthen South-South cooperation and reform global governance.

“With the largest population and one of the largest economies in Africa, Nigeria’s inclusion reflects its growing influence on the global stage. The Brazilian Foreign Ministry highlighted Nigeria’s shared priorities with other BRICS members, affirming its alignment with the bloc’s goals.

“The Partner Country status provides for permanent participation in special sessions of BRICS summits and foreign ministers’ meetings, as well as other high-level events. Partners can also contribute to the group’s outcome documents

“This development cements Nigeria’s role in advancing collaboration within the Global South and reshaping international frameworks to reflect emerging economies,” he stated.

This partnership is expected to cement Nigeria’s role in advancing collaboration within the Global South and reshaping international frameworks to reflect emerging economies.

Nigeria’s inclusion in BRICS is a testament to the country’s growing influence on the global stage. With the largest population and one of the largest economies in Africa, Nigeria shares convergent interests with other BRICS members.

The country is expected to benefit from increased economic cooperation, investment, and access to cutting-edge technologies from BRICS nations.

The BRICS bloc has been expanding in recent years, with Nigeria becoming the ninth partner country, joining Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda, and Uzbekistan.

Originally comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, BRICS has grown into a significant driver of global economic growth, accounting for approximately 37% of the world’s gross domestic product (GDP).

Nigeria’s membership in BRICS is also seen as an opportunity to counter Western hypocrisy and hegemony, particularly in the areas of sanctions and the US dollar’s dominance in global trade.

The bloc’s leaders have been exploring the development of an alternative payment system independent of the US dollar.
