Centenarian ex-US President JImmy Carter exits

A former US President Jimmy Carter has passed away at the age of 100.

The longest lived US President died on Sunday. His demise was announced by his, son Chip.

According to Chip, he died in his home in Plains at about 3.45pm.

Carter who served only one term as the 39th US President, from 1977 to 1981 was the only one from the state of Georgia to have led the country.

He had previously served in the Georgia State Senate from 1967 to 1971 and as the 76th governor of Georgia from 1971 to 1975.

Upon leaving the presidency, he established the Carter Center to promote and expand human rights. He was the 2002 recipient of a Nobel Peace Prize for his promotion of human rights.

Carter was a prolific writer and as well as a leading commentator on global affairs.
