Customs officer’s shooting sparks fury, CEO demands N50m compensation, threatens court action

Dr. Babatunde Adeyemo, a renowned real estate entrepreneur and CEO of Pelican Valley Nigerian Ltd., is seeking N50 million in compensation after a Customs officer shot his Benz G.L450 in Ogun State.

The incident occurred on December 8 along the Imasayi-Abeokuta road.

As a former journalist, Adeyemo’s transition to real estate has been notable, with his company making significant strides in the industry.

Recounting his close shave with death, Adeyemo said the bullet hit the laptop in the car which prevented him from being felled.

He is pressing for compensation for the data lost and the rebuilding of same in the laptop that saved his life.

In a petition to the Comptroller, Nigeria Customs Service, Federal Operations Unit, Zone A, Ikeja, Lagos, Adeyemo’s lawyer, Mr. A. Ogugbara also demanded the replacement of Benz G.L450, either in cash or in a befitting substitute.

He, however, threatened a legal action against the Nigeria Customs Service if his client’s demands were not met.

In the meantime, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) said it is committed to professionalism and discipline, adding that the said personnel has since been apprehended and awaiting proper sanctions.

In a statement, the spokesman for the command at Ikeja, CSC Theophilus Duniya said the command frowned at incidents of misconduct and has launched a disciplinary committee to investigate the matter.

According to CSC Duniya, the officer involved in the shooting incident has been identified and currently in detention.

Duniya said in line with Customs’ commitment to professionalism and discipline, Comptroller Kola Oladeji of Federal Operations Unit, Zone A, Ikeja has also ordered immediate replacement of the damaged laptop and repair of the damaged vehicle.

He stressed that the prompt response of the service demonstrates Customs’ dedication to making amends and ensuring that such incidents are thoroughly addressed.
