Saudi Arabia is throwing its hat into the ring to host the 2036 Olympics, fresh from securing the 2034 World Cup.

This bid has garnered support from Juan Antonio Samaranch, a contender for the International Olympic Committee (IOC) presidency.

Samaranch believes that bringing the Olympics to the Middle East for the first time would be a huge step forward for the region and promote universality in the sporting world.

He also emphasized that the IOC should adapt to the climate and calendar of the host country, rather than the other way around.

The summer Olympics have traditionally taken place between July and August, but Samaranch suggested that the Games could be held at a different time of year to accommodate Saudi Arabia’s climate.

This would not be without precedent, as the 1956 Melbourne Olympics took place in November and December.

Samaranch’s comments come as the IOC prepares to elect a new president in March.

The Spanish candidate is considered one of the front-runners for the position, alongside Lord Coe.

The two candidates have differing views on several issues, including the idea of providing financial rewards to Olympic medalists.

While Coe has suggested that all Olympic medalists should receive a financial reward, Samaranch believes that this would be redundant, given that Olympic athletes already receive significant rewards and support.
