The Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Bukola Olopade, has praised the Ogun Women Run, describing it as a vital platform for empowering and celebrating women in sports.

While flagging off the race in Abeokuta, Olopade noted the importance of initiatives like this in unlocking the potential of female athletes.

In a statement on Saturday, by the Special Assistant on Media, Office of the DG, Mr. Kola Daniel, Olopade cited iconic Nigerian athletes, Mary Onyali and Falilat Ogunkoya, as examples of how the nation can tap into the potential of its female sports talents.

He called on Ogun and other states to continue supporting talents that can shine on national and global stages, reiterating the NSC’s commitment to providing an enabling environment for women’s sports to thrive.

The Ogun Women Run, a 5-kilometre road race designed for women aged 25 to 60, reflects a commitment to fostering female participation in sports.

Persecondnews reports that Aderonke Alabi emerged as the winner, taking home a cash prize of N500,000, while Affigbo Esther and Olude Kehinde finished second and third, respectively.

Olopade also applauded the organizers of the race, Brussel Sports Management Limited, for their consistency in promoting women’s empowerment in sports.

He noted that the NSC will continue to work closely with initiatives like this to unlock the full potential of female athletes.

The event highlighted Nigeria’s large talent pool of budding champions and the promises of the future.
