The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) has acknowledged the challenges hindering the commencement of operations at the Port Harcourt Refinery.
Mr. Olufemi Soneye, the Chief Corporate Communications Officer of NNPC Ltd., attributed the delays to the complexities inherent in brownfield projects.
According to Soneye, the rehabilitation process has encountered unforeseen risks and challenges.
He, however, assured that the issues have been resolved, and commissioning activities have resumed.
“Work is being carried out around the clock to ensure the successful completion of this critical project,” he stated.
He said: “You may recall that mechanical completion of the PHRC revamp was successfully achieved several months ago, marking a significant milestone in the project. Following this, we began the commissioning of critical equipment and process units.
“However, as is common with brownfield projects of this scale and complexity, we encountered unforeseen risks and challenges. These issues have since been effectively resolved, and commissioning activities have resumed.
“Work is being carried out around the clock to ensure the successful completion of this critical project.”
Soneye’s update provides clarity on the project’s status, alleviating concerns about the refinery’s rehabilitation timeline.
The NNPC Ltd.’s commitment to completing the project is reassuring, especially considering the refinery’s strategic importance to Nigeria’s energy landscape.
Persecondnews reports that Port Harcourt refinery rehabilitation is crucial to Nigeria’s efforts to revitalize its refining capacity.
Upon completion, the refinery will contribute significantly to meeting domestic fuel demands, reducing reliance on imports, and generating employment opportunities.
The NNPCL’s transparency regarding the project’s challenges and progress demonstrates its commitment to accountability and stakeholder engagement.
