Libya’s weak representation at CAF hearing sparks outrage

208

Abdul Hakim Al-Shalmani, a Libyan member of the CAF Executive Committee, has expressed frustration and disappointment with Libya’s weak representation at the CAF hearing on the recent contentious Libya-Nigeria match.

The rerouting of the Nigerian team’s flight from Benghazi Airport to Al Abraq Airport led to numerous hardships, including a 15-hour ordeal without essential needs like food, water, and internet access.

Al-Shalmani pointed out the stark contrast between Libya’s solo representation and Nigeria’s robust delegation of over 20 representatives, including the Minister of Sports, lawmakers, and prominent figures.

He said Libyan officials have neglected the critical matter, damaging Libya’s dignity and sporting reputation.

Al-Shalmani emphasized the need for collective action, stating, “This issue requires collective action, not individual appeals.”

CAF has taken the Nigerian team’s experiences seriously, referring the matter to the CAF Disciplinary Board for investigation.

The Libyan Football Federation is under pressure to provide documents related to the cancelled match.

CAF President Patrice Motsepe has hinted at reviewing rules to prevent similar incidents, emphasizing the importance of sportsmanship.
