Pres. Tinubu restates commitment to women’s empowerment as Elumelu lauds govt’s initiative

President Bola Tinubu has restated his administration’s commitment to advancing women’s empowerment and gender equality in Nigeria.

Speaking at the Empower-Her fund-raising dinner organized by the Ministry of Women Affairs in Abuja, Tinubu stressed the importance of addressing the challenges Nigerian women face.

In the event themed ‘Nigeria for Women Farming, Health, Empowerment, Justice, and Entertainment,’ Tinubu said it was imperative to confront the roadblocks Nigerian women face.

Tinubu, who was represented by Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Sen. George Akume, urged the private sector’s collaboration on the programme.

The Nigerian leader acknowledged women’s significant contributions to agriculture, which accounts for over 70 percent of the labour force.

He pointed out the need for investment in agricultural training, access to land, and financial services for women farmers.

This, he believes, will increase their yield, improve livelihoods, and contribute to Nigeria’s food security.

He said: “Empowering women in agriculture must prioritize investment in agricultural training, access to land (this is critical), and financial services for women farmers.

“This will enable women to increase their yield, improve their livelihood, and contribute to Nigeria’s food security. By doing so, we will unlock their full potential, which will drive different economic growth.”

The President also highlighted health disparities affecting women and girls, emphasizing the need for quality healthcare, education, and economic opportunities.

He advocated for strengthening institutions, promoting gender-sensitive policies, and supporting women’s rural organizations to ensure women’s access to justice and protection from violence and discrimination.

The Chairman of the United Bank for Africa, Mr. Tony Elumelu, praised President Tinubu’s leadership in promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment.

Elumelu pointed out UBA’s commitment to gender equality, with 50 percent female board representation, 40 percent female senior management, and 59 percent female graduate management trainees.

Billionaire businessman Arthur Eze donated N100 million to support the women’s empowerment programme, citing his confidence in the Minister of Women Affairs’ efforts to empower women and girls.

Eze also lauded Tinubu’s vision and the First Lady Oluremi Tinubu’s advocacy for women’s empowerment.
