VP Shettima touches down in New York for 79th UN General Assembly

Vice President Kashim Shettima has arrived in New York to represent Nigeria at the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

The Vice President’s office’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Communications, Mr. Stanley Nkwocha, announced this in a statement on Monday.

Nkwocha stated that the VP touched down at John F. Kennedy International Airport in the early morning hours.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Yusuf Tuggar, warmly welcomed Shettima upon his arrival, according to Persecondnews.

Others on the delegation are the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy is Dr. Bosun Tijani, the Director-General of the National Information Technology Development Agency, Mr. Kashifu Inuwa, Nigerian diplomats, UN officials, and numerous others.

Nkwocha added that the vice president would deliver Nigeria’s national statement and participate in various high-level meetings.

Persecondnews recalls that President Bola Tinubu announced he would not attend the event a few days ago.

The President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, released a statement on Thursday saying: “President Bola Tinubu will not attend the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York this year.”

“Therefore, the President has directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to lead Nigeria’s delegation.

“Tinubu, who returned to the country last Sunday after his trips to China and the United Kingdom, wants to focus on domestic issues and address some of the country’s challenges, especially after the recent devastating flooding.”
