The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO) chapter, has urged the Federal Government to revamp the nation’s university system.
In a statement marking the 2024 Victimised Lecturers Day in Nigeria, ASUU expressed deep concern and solidarity with academics who are being persecuted and victimized in the various public universities, reaffirming its commitment to their well-being and rights.
The association, through a joint statement by Dr. E.C. Chinakwe and Dr. C.E. Ihejirika, strongly condemned the victimization of its members in various universities, including Lagos State University, Ojo, Kogi State University, Anyingba, Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki, and others similarly affected.
The statement reads: “ASUU-FUTO stands in solidarity with our colleagues who are facing victimization in some Nigerian public universities.
“This is consistent with the National Executive Council’s resolution, which was made during its meeting on August 17 and 18, 2024, at the University of Ibadan, designating September 10, 2024, as Victimized Lecturers’ Day in Nigeria.
“This is to draw attention to the cruel treatment that some of our members are subjected to while carrying out their duties as union leaders and defying intimidation tactics from their university’s administration and allies.
“We openly express our solidarity with colleagues at Lagos State University, Ojo, Lagos; Kogi State University, Anyingba; Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki; and others so affected.
“These colleagues have been victimized in different ways, including but not limited to unlawful dismissal, suspension from duty, denial of their rights, and harassment.
“We condemn the actions of the administration of these universities and hereby call on the relevant authorities and regulatory bodies to urgently intervene by calling them to order.
“Additionally, we implore the visitors to these universities to take further actions aimed at resolving the issues at stake and ensure that there is harmony between the university administration and all the trade unions in these establishments.”
It added:”We will continue to support all lawful actions aimed at advocating for the welfare of our colleagues/members and that also protect the fundamental rights of our colleagues/members in public universities in Nigeria.
“We remain committed to the improvement of the university system in Nigeria.”
