Ahead of the planned nationwide protest on August 1, the Federal Ministry of Education has directed all the vice-chancellors of federal universities to take the necessary measures to safeguard students, staff, and properties in their institutions.

Dr. Chris Maiyaki, Acting Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), directed universities to prioritize security measures in a circular on Monday.

The directive was issued in response to worries that the demonstration might turn violent, even though citizens’ right to peaceful protest is recognized.

The circular titled, “Urgent arrangements for the security and safety of university staff, students, and property during the proposed nationwide protests,” was directed by Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman.

The circular stated: “The Federal Government is not unaware of the right of any Nigerian to peaceful protest but is concerned about the safety of staff, students, and university property should there be any protest action.

“Vice-Chancellors are advised to take preemptive measures to ensure the security of their university communities and release statements to reassure staff and students of their well-being and safety.”

NUC also advised students to stay on their university campuses and concentrate on their studies.
