FA Cup: Manchester United survive late scare, to qualify for record-breaking 22nd final

Manchester United, which narrowly defeated Conventry City on penalties, will face Manchester City in the FA Cup final for the second consecutive season.

United took the initiative for the first 60 minutes and worked their way up to a three-goal lead after Scott McTominay, Harry Maguire, and Bruno Fernandes all found the back of the net.

However, there was a twist in the story when Coventry came from behind to force the match into extra time.

With 20 minutes to go, Ellis Simms scored on the turn to give the Championship club some hope before Callum O’Hare’s deflected strike looped over Andre Onana.

Haji Wright then applied a stoppage time penalty, imposing an additional 30 minutes.

Victor Torp scored right at the end of the game, but the referee ruled his effort offside, forcing penalties to decide the match.

The championship side were unlucky to miss two of their kicks in the penalty shootout, which eventually decided their fate, with United winning 4-2 at Wembley.

Manchester United (22) have now reached the FA Cup final more times than any other side in the competition’s history, overtaking Arsenal (21).

Asked whether winning the FA Cup will make this a successful season for United, Fernandes said: “We’ll never be successful if we win [only] the FA Cup.

“The standard of this club is much higher than what we have been doing. We have to do better in the league, the League Cup, and in Europe.”
